This capstone project explores the profound influence of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) environment on maternal mental health, focusing on how the stresses and challenges associated with having an infant in the NICU affect mothers. The project investigates the psychological and emotional toll on these mothers, including the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and trauma. Furthermore, it examines the critical role that occupational therapy plays in empowering mothers during this challenging time. Through targeted interventions, occupational therapy can support maternal mental health, helping mothers adapt to their new roles and fostering a stronger bond with their infants. This project underscores the importance of a holistic approach in the NICU, where maternal well-being is prioritized alongside infant care.
