About Us

BeMomaware is a project of the Sacramento Maternal Mental Health Collaborative (SMMHC) and funded through the generous support of Postpartum Support International, Anthem Blue Cross.

The goal of the BeMomaware project is to reduce stigma and increase access to maternal mental health care in Black/African American and Latina communities in Sacramento through culturally responsive methods.

Maternal mental health conditions disproportionately affect people of color. In California, 1 in 3 Black/African-American and 1 in 4 Latina birthing people experience a maternal mental health condition at some point in pregnancy or postpartum. However, these communities have the lowest participation rate in care targeted at treating maternal mental health.

In 2021 and 2022 we received information from the community about their experiences with maternal mental health and the systems of care that exist in Sacramento County. These experts have been instrumental in the direction of this project. With the community voice at the forefront we endeavor to:

  • Raise community awareness about maternal mental health

  • Increasing health system literacy

  • Reduce stigma and mistrust of healthcare systems

  • Promote culturally responsive communication
