Individual Therapy

What is Therapy?

Therapy is a treatment for life challenges that become so overwhelming they impact our daily-to-day lives.

Therapists are licensed professionals trained to work with you and guide you to more fully understanding what you need to improve your functioning and quality of life.

There are different approaches to therapy, so you may not always like the first one you sit down with.

If you are more comfortable talking to someone who shares your gender, ethnic, racial, cultural, or spiritual background that is ok!

Finding a good therapist is like finding a good hairdresser. Once you found them, you’ll travel miles to see them!

Why Therapy?

Individual Therapy is the first line of treatment for mild to moderate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

For moderate to severe symptoms individual therapy plus medication is evidence-based. Evidence-based means that many studies have been conducted demonstrating that this combination of treatment is effective.

  • A good therapist will…

    • Want what's best for you.

    • See you as the expert.

    • Ask permission

    • Never assume

    • Check their bias

  • Health plans vary in how you can find providers in their network. BeMomaware partners with insurance agencies to take the guess work out of your search.

    • Check out our insurance quick guides for a step-by-step walk through for 8 different insurance carriers

    • Go to our Care Connector to get started

    • Do an internet search providers you are considering. Most providers have an online presence.

    • Look for providers with a PMH-C or training in maternal mental health

  • You still have options!

If you are currently receiving pregnancy-only Medi-Cal it is VERY IMPORTANT that you talk to your doctor BEFORE your insurance expires. Your doctor can complete a request to extend your insurance through 1 year postpartum so you can access mental health services. Go to our Care Connector for more details.

If you are currently working and your agency offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services you can get care for mild to moderate symptoms of depression or anxiety. It is unlikely you will find someone specialized in maternal mental health, but it is still ok to ask.

If you are working and contribute to a Health Savings Account, there are therapists who will accept payments from a Health Savings Account.

If you plan to pay out-of-pocket for services you can find providers, from $30.00 to several hundred, specialized in maternal mental health at Postpartum Support International or through websites like Psychology Today and Therapy Den. You can also try online therapy platforms. Click here to see the top rated platforms.
